After CGC

Your journey doesn’t have to end once you and your dog earn your Canine Good Citizen title. There are tons of other opportunities to continue to grow your knowledge and skills, strengthen the bond with your dog, and enjoy rewarding, enriching and fun activities together. Shall we start?

AKC Community Canine

The AKC Community Canine program is all about ensuring you have a well-behaved dog while you’re out and about in the community. Where CGC happens in a simulated environment, the 10-step AKC Community Canine test is conducted in real life situations—like walking on a busy sidewalk or through a local park–giving you and your dog the confidence to enjoy everyday to the fullest, no matter what comes your way.

AKC Urban CGC

Another step beyond the basic CGC test is the AKC Urban CGC title, which tests your CGC skills in an active city or town setting. There are 10-steps to the test that your dog must pass to earn the official AKC Urban CGC title, but it is administered in a place where there are cars, streets to be crossed, noises, and fast-paced distractions.

AKC Trick Dog

Trick dog training is a great way to provide your dog with physical and mental exercise. Going beyond the skills in your CGC training, you and your dog will learn how to high five, or try more advanced tricks, like training your pup to jump into your arms. For someone brand new to dog training, trick dog training might seem like a big leap, but your CGC training provides a great foundation for you and your dog to begin with easy tricks and progress to more challenging activities together. By earning the CGC title first, you only have to perform 5 tricks from the Novice checklist to earn an AKC Novice Trick Dog title, commonly called “CGC + 5.”

AKC Therapy Dog

Another benefit of CGC is it allows you to prepare your dog for therapy dog training. In fact, many therapy dog program require the CGC award before their therapy-specific training begins. Whether they’re working with a child who is learning to read, visiting a patient in a hospital or a senior in assisted living, therapy dogs and their owners work together as a team to improve the lives of others. Dogs can provide a valuable sense of reassurance, joy, or calmness to people experiencing hard, stressful or lonely times in their life. Training your pup to become a therapy dog is a heartfelt way to share the love you have with your dog with the world.

Team Teddy

"Bk9T was exactly what I was looking for when I needed to get one of my daschunds certified for the good canine citizen test. I was having a hard time finding a trainer and the ones I came across seemed so intense and intimidating with long consulting hours and fees. Teddy my 5 year old daschund loved Hannah so much and the lessons were comprehensive and fun. Moose my 10 month old puppy really enjoyed learning tricks and commands. Hannah is very professional and knowledgeable plus kind and funny. The results were incredible. Highly recommend if anyone is looking for a more personal and laid back approach to dog training."

FAQs

What is CGC?

At the AKC, we believe that all dogs can be good dogs, and all owners can be great owners: all it takes is a little bit of training, lots of love, and of course, plenty of praise along the way.

That’s why we created the Canine Good Citizen™ (CGC) program: a two-part course designed to help you and your dog be the best you can be–together. Since 1989, over 1 million dogs and their owners have participated in CGC, mastering ten basic skills that instill confidence and good manners in and out of your home.

Not only does CGC training create long-lasting trust between you and your pup, but also ensures you’ll be good neighbors and friends to everyone around you—and, if you’re interested in going beyond the basics, CGC also lays the foundation for other AKC sports and activities like obedience, agility, tracking, and performance events.

Who can participate in CGC?

There are no age limits for participating in the Canine Good Citizen program. The only stipulation is that a dog must take the test with his owner. If a dog is in a shelter or foster situation, he can still learn the skills needed to pass the test and be labeled

Even though a dog may start CGC at any age, puppies are sometimes developmentally more suited for the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy program.

Does my dog need to retake the CGC test after a certain amount of time?

Once you and your dog pass your CGC exam, there is no AKC requirement to retake the test. Some therapy dog groups and insurance companies will ask to have a test that is current within 2 years. Regardless, we always encourage you to keep training and trying new activities with your dog so you can continue to bond, provide mental stimulation and exercise.

What does passing the CGC get me and my dog?

Not only will you and your dog understand the basics of dog training, and master skills like sit, down and stay, some homeowners’ insurance programs or hotels offer discounts for CGC dogs, and an increasing number of apartments and condos see passing the CGC test as a major bonus for becoming a resident.

Additionally, you’ll be in a better position to pursue a variety of dog sports. After going the CGC training, you and your dog will have stronger communication skills, making future sports easier to learn.
